the History of the turn of France
The Tour de Franceis a competition cyclist by stages created into 1903 being held in July. It is held on more than 3.000 km and is organized by the group of Amaury press. “The Turn” is most prestigious of the tests cyclists.
Beginnings of the Turn
The history of the turn of France:Also called the “Outer Loop”, the Tour de Francewas created in 1903 per Henri Desgrange, founder of “the Car” (ancestor of the sporting daily newspaper the Team), on an idea of the journalist Géo Lefèvre (1877-1961). The objective was to compete with the races Paris-Brest-Paris (sponsored by “the Small Newspaper”) and Bordeaux-Paris (sponsored by “the Bicycle”). The competition enters the two sporting titles “the Car” and “the Bicycle” reached in this year 1903 its paroxysm. The daily newspaper of Desgrange, “the Car-Bicycle” is even constrained to change its title (“the Car”) on January 16, 1903, by decision of the courts. A fight to the death begins consequently between these two titles. As of January 19, 1903, the Car announces with creation of a new test: The Turn of France. Desgrange announces proudly that it is about “the greatest cycle race of the whole world”. With the foundation of the Turn, “the Car” takes ascending decisive on its competitor created in 1892. “The Bicycle” becomes “the Newspaper of the Car” at the end of 1904, then disappears. The concept even of Tour de Franceis not new, even in 1903. The idea of a Tour de Francecyclist goes back to 1893 when the Parisian daily newspaper “the Newspaper” emitted the idea to sponsor such a test, which finally never took place. Sixty runners take part in the Tour first of France. It begins on July 5, 1903 to 3 p.m. and 16 minutes in front of the coffee “the Alarm clock Morning” in Montgeron, in the southern suburbs of Paris. This Tour first includes/understands only six stages connecting Paris, Lyon, Marseilles, Toulouse, Bordeaux and Nantes.
The discipline of the Turn
the history of the turn of France: The discipline imposed by Henri Desgrange between 1903 and the years 1930 made for much for the legend of the test, in spite of criticisms of the Pélissier brothers taken again by Albert London. The runners were not entitled to any form of assistance external on the road of the Turn, and it was necessary that they repair themselves their machines in the event of technical hitch. At the time of the Turn 1913, Eugene Christophe, solid virtual leader of the general classification, broke his fork in Tourmalet. In the name of the principle of autonomy, Christophe is constrained to repair to him even his machine and loses all his chances of final victory. Not less than three judges of the Turn attended this repair in order to make sure that it did not receive external assistances. The successors of Desgrange are less rigid, and the payment is humanized gradually.
